Evolution 2014, The Biggest Fighting Game Tournament In The World, Takes Place This Weekend!

The world's largest fighting video game tournament is nearly upon us, Evolution 2014! Fighting game players from across the known galaxy will gather in Las Vegas from July 11-July 13, 2014 to determine who deserves the number one headband.

Here is the full list of official tournaments and registration numbers for Evo 2014.
  • Ultra Street Fighter 4 - 1,979
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - 1,074
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee - 970
  • Blazblue: Chrono Phantasma - 508
  • Killer Instinct - 338
  • King of Fighters 13 - 319
  • Injustice: Gods Among Us - 311
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2 - 257
Twenty companies have provided financial support for this tournament including Nintendo who initially blocked Evo 2013 from streaming Super Smash Bros. Melee before having a change of heart in time for online viewers to watch the tournament. Nintendo's reversal displayed the influence of the fighting game community, and is yet another reward brought about by the dedicated grassroots efforts of the community. 
The biggest storylines of Evo 2014 revolve around the influx of powerful international competition. According to Shoryuken, a record number of registrants signed up including 836 international competitors from 46 different countries. Fighting games tournaments have been traditionally dominated by Japanese and Korean combatants since the mid 90s. Fans of the scene expect nothing different this year. Eventhubs asked users in separate polls to vote for how many North American and European players would claw their way into the top 8 for Ultra Street Fighter 4. The number are pretty staggering. The public expects history to repeat itself including one of the biggest names in the fighting game community, Seth Killian.
