Marvel's Agent Carter Gets Two Key Roles Filled

Posted by Unknown - Sunday, August 31, 2014

Here comes another news flash from the lovable juggernaut of entertainment that is Marvel. With their cinematic films series blowing away both critics and audiences and making records fall at the box office, they continue to make waves in the TV world. With Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. about to kick off season 2, they've announced two additions to another one of their (upcoming) shows, Marvel's Agent Carter.

TV series Agent Carter starring Hayley Atwell
Set to star the delicious Hayley Atwell in the titular role, Marvel's Agent Carter gets two more cast members signing on. These two fellas are Chad Michael Murray in the role of SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve) gent Jack Thompson and Enver Gjokai as Agent Daniel Sousa.

Both of these studs will be joining Peggy while she takes on a new role at the SSR headquarters in New York City. Details thus far are not too in-depth, but we do know a few little tidbits about the main thrust of the storyline.

Premiering in 2015, Marvel's Agent Carter will see Atwell's character from Captain America beginning in 1946 shortly after World War II. She finds herself pushed off to the side once peace reigns and the male soldiers return from fighting on the front lines. We also get to see Tony Stark's father, Howard, in a key role managing Carter at SSR. Marvel likes those acronyms, don't they?

It seems like they will throw in some romance as Peggy picks up the pieces of her broken heart after losing Steve Rogers (Captain America, for those that are comic book challenged) when the hero took a nose dive into an icy grave. On the Blu-ray for Iron Man 3, Marvel did a little "One Shot" and showed what Marvel's Agent Carter might be capable of, and I think the idea has a lot of potential.

What say you? Will this be a solid addition to the Marvel television line-up? Sound off below.

For anyone who has ever been to Six Flags out in Southern California, you may have ridden the Batman or Superman ride there. They are both pretty fun. Supes' ride is a bit short, but it's a nice kick in the gut. The older Batman one is a strange combination of swing and roller coaster. You float suspended and dash through a mist; I guess it's meant to be like the Batcave?

Six Flags Great Adventure Justice League ridesRegardless, Six Flags has announced they are building two new rides, one new Batman-themed roller coaster and a second dealing with The Justice League. These two are much more advanced than anything they've done before with these properties, so it should be fun. Six Flags is taking the idea that people will recognize these comic book properties and want to dive into their parks to ride them.

Check out the Batman one:

  • It will have the world's first on-board magnetic technology so the ride can flip head-over-heels in six separate free-fly flips
  • Also a 4D wing coaster where passengers will face each other on the ride
  • The peak will be 120 feet tall, plus two beyond-90-degree raven drops, giving passengers a gnarly freefalling sensation
  • A Bruce Wayne/Batman themed queue line as you wait to ride one of 5 vehicles fitting up to 8 people each
The Justice League one sounds the most intriguing:
  • Passengers will line up in the queue and get instructions, 3D glasses, and a stun gun to help stop the bad guys
  • The storyline is deep: Lex Luthor and Joker team up to hack into Batman's computer to expose weaknesses to the other Justice League members
  • You get to fight along Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern to stop the world from succumbing to Joker's laughing gas
  • In what sounds more like Disneyland, riders get to interact with animatronic superheroes during the ride
  • Other features include high-tech vehicles that take riders on what appears to be a thrilling attraction
Will you be jumping on board at your closest Six Flags to check these uber rides out? Sound off below.

We here at Fanboys Anonymous are lucky enough to get advanced copies sent our way when anything new comes out from certain publishers, Titan Publishing included. So thanks, Titan, for the copy of the darkly Gothic graphic novel, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (FHA).

The images and artwork are top notch, but the story could use some work. That's a mini-review for the whole thing that encapsulates my response to it. We begin our story with a focus on righteous do-gooder Adam Cahill, a member of the Order of Solomon who is bound by his ancient bloodline to protect the Earth from Armageddon.

four horsemen of the apocalypse graphic novel
It's a nice beginning, and I like when Cahill starts to build his own team of fighters determined to face and defeat the Four Horsemen. They are an oddball group and different from what one would expect. A politician, a hooker, a murderer, and Cahill are all bound together to fight the evil of Hell. The book has a good push forward into the story and a good pace. It's never boring, but once you reach the end you may feel a bit hollow. Not much happens. Interspersed between scenes of violence and fighting (which I liked), there is dialogue about this and that, but ultimately it's a bit of a cliche-riddled plot.

Evil must find the Seven Seals and bring about the end of the world; good must stop them. I really enjoyed what happens along the way, and the writers do a good job of twisting expectations, but considering how long this tome is and how many pages it has stuffed in it, there should be more story points packed in along the way. There's nothing wrong with simplicity, but I wanted to see more character interactions, more from the side of evil instead of them just being evil for evil's sake.

Why do they want to take over the world? They seem to be having a grand ol' time in Hell. What is at stake if people die? Won't they go straight to Heaven to be with God? Isn't this a good thing overall? I don't want to spoil anything, but there are moments where something bad happens, but then it didn't happen. It was a nice change up at the time, but it was destroyed by a quick fix. Not quite a deus ex machina, but disappointing.

four horsemen of the apocalypse graphic novels release coming
Don't get the wrong idea; this is something I enjoyed and the type of graphic novel I would eat up in a second if I saw it on the shelf. The designs of the Four Horsemen in FHA are stellar and really well done. They're very Gothic and "updated" while retaining the flavor of what one would expect from the classic archetypes of Death, War, Pestilence, and Famine. The panels are nicely arranged and not too hard to follow along with, which is something I find happening in some titles.

So the good outweighs the bad with the FHA graphic novel from Titan Publishing. There are great visuals, a fast-paced story, and some cool ideas on an old story.

Recommended for the like-minded Goths out there. I give it a solid 7 out of 10.

Is anyone looking forward to picking this up? Anyone know about it but on the fence about getting it? Sound off below.

You know those days when a lot of news and cool spoilers and stuff leak? Well Dacitonians, today is said day!

Recently leaked online were a few photos of Dr. Doom from the reboot of Fantastic Four. Now I personally have nothing but contempt for this reboot because it will be FOX's half-assed excuse to keep the rights to the franchise and stick it to Disney and Marvel. Nevertheless, being a man of nerdy proportions, I still have my interest piqued at the fact it does involve comic book characters.

Fantastic Four Reboot News and Spoilers

Let's set aside my utter disdain at the fact that this will be released to theaters with way too many liberties being taken with one of the founding pillars of the Marvel name and take a look at one of the most feared villains in the Marvel Universe: Doom.

New Avengers: Age of Ultron Photos Released

Posted by Unknown - Friday, August 29, 2014

Ready for some football?! No, wait. That's not right. Ready for some new, exciting Avengers: Age of Ultron pics?!? Oh yeah, we've got 'em right here. In addition to the images, we've got some commentary from yours truly, the resident comic book movie nerd here at Fanboys Anonymous. I'm making it my mission to provide the most comprehensive information out there on comic book films.

With Marvel dominating much in sight, we get some exciting pics on the upcoming Avengers sequel at a good time. Let's examine each one and do more than say what they are, but also postulate what it might mean for the story/film. I will speak of the characters only and not the actors playing them because I'm a comic books nerd and don't care about the actors in this context.

joss whedon director of the avengers franchise marvel movies
This first one shows director Joss Whedon and Hawkeye going over some stuff. First off, I love that Whedon is getting down with the action, showing Mr. Master Archer Hawkeye how it's done. Hawkeye has a new uniform that looks medieval in nature and I look for him to have a more active role in Age of Ultron. Whedon's script did a brilliant job of giving each member of the Avengers' team stuff to do in the first film, but I think Hawkeye was the only one that got the shaft somewhat. In fairness, the movie needed to have someone fall prey to Loki's machinations to show how dangerous he is, and Hawkeye was it.

tony stark robert downey jr mark ruffalo avengers film series
Next up is a duo I love dearly, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner. What I like best about Stark is that his true persona is more interesting than his alter ego, Iron Man. He has serious skills, and the scenes in the first film with Dr. Banner were really interesting. These are the two serious brains on the team, and it's nice to see them working together to figure things out. All the characters have their roles. Hulk is the tank, similar to Thor, while Captain America is the leader and Stark and Banner in non-Hulk form do the science stuff. That's great. Science stuff is a technical term, so it may go over your head. Don't worry, just keep reading. I use even deeper words.

avengers age of ultron news for upcoming comic book filmThe last image released is of two new members on the team, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. This is a different Quicksilver from the X-Men: Days of Future Past; some malarkey (that's a deep word) about the rights for the character wouldn't allow both studios to use him. I loved the DoFP guy and can't stand the actor here, but I'll reserve judgment until I see the film. Sorry, but he seems like a douche bag. Anyway, the destruction in the background is apparent, and maybe these two were called into action to help out the core team.

So there we go. What do people think of the images and the characters? How will Whedon weave his magic yet again next year? Sound off below.

Review: Cyclops #4 by Greg Rucka and Carmen Carnero

Posted by Sean Hamilton - Thursday, August 28, 2014

Alexander Lozano Cyclops Cover
Cyclops #4 Cover by Alexander Lozano
Who doesn't love a father/son camping trip?

A little male bonding under the stars can do wonders to mend the relationship and learn new things about each other—even if the stars are galaxies away from Earth and space creatures see you as a fine meal in waiting. Does it make for a good story, though?

The verdict isn't clear on this. Cyclops #4 seems to be a transitional issue. It places the pair of Scott and Chris Summers between set action pieces in issue 3 and 5. Now there isn't anything wrong with this, but if the execution is awry, then the final product can feel flat. Although I didn't feel this for Cyclops #4, without the back story a new reader could pick this up and wonder where it was going.

We now know that Greg Rucka will be leaving the series after next month's issue, to be replaced with John Layman. This is sad, because Rucka seemed to have aspirations for the series, but it was necessary due to his other work load. Given this, the transition is more than just story pacing and the beats of the narrative; it is creative also.

Cyclops #4 artwork by Carnero, Pallot and Sotomayer
Cyclops #4 Interior by Carnero,
Pallot and Sotomayer
For the story in Cyclops #4 we are still treated to the ongoing development of the Summers relationship. Cyclops and Corsair are pitted against their circumstances and must struggle to survive against a lack of provisions and native fauna while trying to escape from their marooned state. Amid these trials there is a touching scene that is reflective for father and son; Corsair reprimands young Scott for appearing to give up hope and contrasts his attitude with that of his older counterpart back on Earth. This comparison galvanizes Scott into making a decisive decision to find a way off the planet they crashed onto. The result sets up nicely for a confrontation with bounty hunters who are after Corsair in the next issue of Cyclops.

I'm not always such a sucker for the cover appeal in mainstream comics, but I have to admit that Alexander Lozano's art has impressed me every issue so far. It has an artistic and polished quality that stands out and grabs attention, as a good cover should. This has been supported by the able interiors of Russell Dauterman in the preceding issues, although the artist changed to Carmen Carnero in Cyclops #4.

Carnero's interior penciling and Terry Pallot's inking do well to link into the nice start Dauterman has made with this series. The transition is smooth and able thanks to the continued coloring by Chris Sotomayer. It would be great to preview some of the different stages of the art process to see where the cosmic landscape so much on display in Cyclops #4 is put to the page. Regardless, it is providing a uniqueness to this X-Men book that is not on display across other titles that are X-related.
Cyclops #4 Sotomayer cosmic colours
Cosmic Colors by Sotomayer
With another artist, Javier Garron, picking up the pencil with the change in creative team from issue 6, I hope the feel of the book continues to hold fast to the good standard already set.

Cyclops continues to be a fun series to read, and it will be an interesting ride for as long as it continues.  I have to wonder how long this will be. as it is expected that the young Scott from the future may need to reunite with his teammates at some point. It is overhanging questions like this that continue to leave some intrigue for the series. What is going to happen to Corsair? What changes will the creative team bring? Leave your thoughts below and keep coming back for more on the Cyclops series.

Some exciting news for fans of the psychological thriller Shutter Island, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leo DiCaprio. The creepy, atmospheric mind trip is getting switched over into TV series mode and looks like it might be promising. Scorsese is set to direct at least some of the episodes (wow!), and the author of the novel upon which the movie was based, Dennis Lehane, is penning the pilot's script.

The film, a twist on the criminal drama with DiCaprio playing opposite Mark Ruffalo, follows along a mysterious path of half truths, frightening omens, and potential madness. It had a solid cast, and although most consider it a lesser Scorsese picture, I think a TV series set before the events of the film (a prequel expounding on the origins of the island hospital the film centers on) has tons of potential.

shutter island new tv series in the works from director martin scorseseThus far, it looks as though it may be a bit of a American Horror Story clone, and that sounds great to me. The film was nice mix of suspense, horror, and human drama. Lehane is not only a best selling novelist but also is fast becoming a hot commodity in the script writing business. He has penned some episodes for the hit show Boardwalk Empire, and if the quality of that show is any indication, Shutter Island looks to be a hit in the making.

So is anyone else excited to see Scorsese do it up on the small screen? Does this show have potential? Sound off below.

Suck it! Suck it! Suck it! After a whole week of defeats facing Sapphiron and Kel'Thuzad, I finally made it! Huge, huge thanks to Amaz and his mage deck for defeating Sapphiron as well as Vernitrax's budget priest deck posted on Hearthpwn.com. Let's start from the beginning, however.

blizzard hearthstone curse of naxxramas frostwyrm lair review sapphiron kel'thuzad

In hopes of keeping up to par with the Hearthstone release, I purchased the Frostwyrm Lair with my credit card to avoid having to play endless hours for gold gathering and thus publishing this review on a "fresh" Wednesday evening when the Frostwyrm Lair was still a novelty. Here I sit 1 week later, teary-eyed, as I have at long last defeated Kel'Thuzad. Sapphiron, as it turns out, was not the harder of the two.

blizzard hearthstone curse of naxxramas frostwyrm lair review sapphiron kel'thuzad
What can I say? I had an easy time in normal mode. Sapphiron's terrible Hero Power was severely attenuated by that Frozen Champion minion laying on my side of the board. Any minions adjacent to it were immune to Sapphiron's minion-clearing spell. All I did was limit two minions at a time and I was set. My mage did the trick.

blizzard hearthstone curse of naxxramas frostwyrm lair review sapphiron kel'thuzad
Kel'Thuzad was a tad more complex, but still, no big deal. His "cheating" was somewhat to be expected due to the nature of the character. Once you blow out his armor he ends your turn no matter what. Make sure you laid out all of your moves in the turn when you drop his armor. Or, you can wait until turn 11 when he strikes the End Turn button with lightning and whines about it being his turn (although I have seen him do this a turn or two earlier). His Hero Power then switches from Frost Blast to Chains, which takes control of one of your minions (supposedly randomly).  Nevertheless, a few tweaks here and there and I believe a modified warrior did the trick. You'll have to forgive my uncertainty, but it really feels like forever since the innocence of pre-Heroic mode and don't quite remember which hero I used.

The paladin challenge was uneventful. Nothing of note, except those Echoing Ooze minions are way cool.

blizzard hearthstone curse of naxxramas frostwyrm lair review sapphiron kel'thuzad
Now the headache begins. Heroic Sapphiron is a really neat challenge—until your 20th try or so. It takes a very specific and well thought out deck to defeat him. The only difference between normal and Heroic Sapphiron is that pesky little Frozen Champion. Now, there is no way to preserve any minions for two turns. Charge and deathrattles only. Many claimed a zoo deck would do the trick, others claimed an endless flurry of secret spells would weigh heavily in the game. The fact that I lacked one or two (literally) hunter cards left that hero out of the question. I tried a few times with paladin, but without Leeroy Jenkins, it was useless. In fact, every research I made online pointed to Leeroy Jenkins, but I didn't have enough dust to craft him. In the end, I publicly thank Amaz for showing the way. At the expense of Harrison Jones, I crafted Myself a Blizzard and a Pyroblast cards. Sorry Doctor Jones, no time for love!

blizzard hearthstone curse of naxxramas frostwyrm lair review sapphiron kel'thuzad
This was a great hand on the first five turns. Sadly, it led to nothing.

I then fell into a spiral of self-doubt and questioning. My own decks didn't work against Sapphiron, why would I be able to come up with something against Kel'Thuzad? So I began searching, and the most improbable of all decks did it - but not without trying it out around 20 times before victory. I even made .gifs to share with you guys, such is the thrill I feel.

blizzard hearthstone curse of naxxramas frostwyrm lair review sapphiron kel'thuzadblizzard hearthstone curse of naxxramas frostwyrm lair review sapphiron kel'thuzad

The only reason I used this priest deck is because I saw it in action in some YouTube video, otherwise I wouldn't have believed in it. A ridiculously low-budget shaman deck was also a close second (though never in a million years will I know how to play with shaman). The modified Vernitax deck is by far the best I've seen against Kel'Thuzad (unless you go for a really expensive paladin).

blizzard hearthstone curse of naxxramas frostwyrm lair review sapphiron kel'thuzadThere were many, many times where I came close to defeating either bosses. Comically so, where it would be pure cheap tactics on behalf of (especially) Kel'Thuzad. One such occasion was that out of four minions, he stole my 32/32 Deathlord when Kel'Thuzad himself was at 31 and had no taunts on the board. It was too much. It became clear it was going to take some serious luck or many weeks of gaining gold and buying decks to craft cards.

Another droll event was when I had Sapphiron on his knees; there I was, with a full, healthy Thaddius, and two (read it again, two) Blessed Champion cards on my hand. Do the math: 11x2 = 22. 22x2 = 44. So what did I do? At 2 AM after 15 or so different decks, my math goes like 11x2 = 22. 22x2 = 33. It was turn 10, Sapphiron was at 40 health and I just said 'oh fuck it' and attacked a minion. Fail.

Yes, it was a perilous journey, where I figured I might as well review this expansion without completing it, but that would go against the Fanboys Anonymous code. Is there such a code? There should be.

Here is my final verdict on Curse of Naxxramas - Awesome!
blizzard hearthstone curse of naxxramas frostwyrm lair review sapphiron kel'thuzad
I loved the new cards and the new challenges presented. The boss gimmicks were something that forced people to recreate their attack and defense patterns as opposed to just using their best decks. It became a whole new game after Naxxramas.

Speaking of bosses, my favorite was Loatheb in Heroic. It seemed so easy, but it was a very deceitful challenge. Still, watching your minions buffed up like that was oh so sweet. My least favorite was Kel'Thuzad, for obvious reasons. More than difficult, it was like Blizzard made him deliberately difficult at the programming level, as if there was a handicap where he practically always, 99 times out of 100 had the proper spells to neutralize your moves. Still, if you think about it, that's where the challenge lies—defeating not only a powerful boss, but a cheating boss as well.

I'm going to miss Curse of Naxxramas. I really wanted a challenge way back at the Arachnid Quarter, and how I got one. I haven't had his much trouble with bosses since Kintaro and Shao Kahn! The last two bosses were the only hair-pulling moment I encountered, and the rest was quite fun. If you're reading this and haven't managed yet, don't give up! I've seen it done, I've done it and so can you. With fairly basic decks too!

I wonder what will be next for Hearthstone? What WoW dungeon or instance will be brought over to this card game? Comment below and see you next time! Thanks for following!

Week in Geek: August 27th, 2014

Posted by Jeff Penner - Wednesday, August 27, 2014

Want to know what happened the past few days in nerd culture? WEEK IN GEEK is your quick fix to catch up with the rest of the fanboys out there.

Nerdy current events in geek culture for this week

MOVIES

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For Tanks at the Box Office.

My take: It was a sequel nobody really asked for and makes me really question why Guillermo del Toro can't get the $150 million budget approved to make Hellboy 3.

Star Wars Expanded Universe Also Rebooted?

My take: It's possible Disney is letting the Star Wars team try and connect all their new books, comics, movies and animated series into one story. This would mean that the upcoming Star Wars Rebels is canon and directly connected to the story we know so far. It's a pretty big goal, considering nothing has been seen by the public yet. The jury is still out on that series, as well as Episode VII and one mis-step like we had with the prequels could really screw things up all over again.

DC Movies and the "No Jokes" Policy.

My take: There is a rumor going around that DC is adamant that is avoids any possible pitfalls with their upcoming films, including being funny. If they can't win with a brooding Superman, how will they win with a joke-less Flash or Green Lantern (but, you know, a better one)? Supposedly the rumblings are wrong, according to Seth Rogan (somehow) but it's very possible DC is trying to distance itself from Marvel films and looking like copycats. Too late, DC.

TELEVISION

The Emmys Prove Predictable.

My take: Good TV is good TV and if shows win year after year, it's possible that they earned it. It's simple to be negative and call out "snubs" but that's lazy. We're being treated to some amazing TV these days and watching a "predictable" awards show doesn't mean "wrong" or "boring". I agree with most of the winners (though I picked Amy Poehler over Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and look forward to great shows continuing and new shows to surprise me.

Minority Report TV Series in the Works.

My take: Why, you may ask? I'd ask the same question. The movie was based on a short story and didn't show a future I wanted to see more of, anyway. The premise, preventing crimes before they happen, has been used before in shows like Early Edition. In that series, the lead character mysteriously received tomorrow's newspaper every day and went about preventing the horrible things that were reported. A Minority Report series would be roughly the same idea with a more sci-fi twist.

Daredevil to Have Darker Tone.

My take: I watched Captain America: The Winter Soldier again the other day and it was amazing again. However, for the first time, I really noticed how similar all the Marvel movies look. The Netflix series, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage may have a darker tone and, therefore, potentially different cinemetography. This would be a welcome change, as far as I'm concerned. They may also cross over with the movies, meaning we could see cinematic characters in new ways (picture Captain America on patrol roof-hopping).

Full House Back on the Air?

My take: I hear rumblings of Full House coming back to TV. Not a new version or reboot nor a reunion one-off special…an actual series. Although I have little to no interest in this, I'm curious what kind of take they would go for on the family dynamic. Regardless what you thought of the show, it taught a lot of broken homes that whatever your living situation was, there are all kinds of families out there.

COMIC BOOKS

Marvel/Disney Printing Their Own Money.

My take: By taking old Dark Horse comic books, of which there are PLENTY, and re-printing them, Marvel is going to laugh all the way to the bank. These are stories that many casual fans have always ignored and hardcore fans will be excited to get new copies of. With news bouncing around that all books will now be part of the new canon, uninformed readers will snap these up like crazy.

Is a Marvel Reboot Coming?

My take: Speculation is that Marvel, starting many books back at #1 again this May, could be about to experience a DC-like crisis. With time travel in the recent Age of Ultron series throwing universes out of whack and putting Earth in the dimensional cross-hairs, it's very possible! Upcoming stories already feature time travel and storylines that will require re-launching anyway. The timelines all seem to line up perfectly to launch alongside Avengers: Age of Ultron. As a long time reader, I'm not sure I like the idea of rebooting at Marvel but I'm not afraid of a shake-up, either. This spring, Marvel and DC appear to both be leading towards a line-wide clean slate. It will be very interesting to see if that happens.

Action Comics Sells for $3.2 Million.

My take: It's exciting any time comic books get the spotlight on the news but this price sets a new precedent for comic book value. That's not a good thing. We're likely to see a leap in the value of rare books for a time, then a big drop. Individual issues will continue to be worth less than the selling price and the industry could get the evil eye like it did back after the '90s collector bust.

Watch out for this segment each and every Wednesday. We'll see you next week!

Yet another celebrity has fallen. Actor/director Richard Attenborough has died at age 90. He started out as an actor for many years, even decades, throughout the '40s and '50s before directing his first feature film, The Angry Silence, in 1960.

RIP Richard Attenborough death
Attenborough then went on to direct several more pictures and act in many films before winning an Oscar for directing the Ben Kingsley starring biopic Gandhi in 1982. He also directed Robert Downey Jr. in another biopic in 1992 called Chaplin. Attenborough is perhaps best known for starring as John Hammond in the mega-blockbuster Jurassic Park the next year. This was of course directed by Stephen Spielberg and I'm sure the two men had a great time working together, one Oscar winning director to another.

He made a cameo appearance in the sequel, Jurassic Park: The Lost World, and it's impossible for me to think of the movie without hearing his voice... "Welcome to Jurassic Park!" In 1967, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Attenborough was then made a Knight Bachelor in 1976 and in 1993 he was made a life peer as a Baron. I don't know what all of that means but it sounds impressive.

Richard Attenborough is survived by his wife of 70 years, two children, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Any other favorite roles besides John Hammond? Other directing gigs I should check out? Sound off below in the comments.

As a big Marvel fan, it is gratifying to see the company doing so well, especially since it has not always been this way. Around the end of the 20th century, Marvel was a hair's breadth away from bankruptcy and things were looking so grim they were selling off office furniture at their headquarters. That's not a joke, but a true story.

dc comics can't compete with marvel at the box office
Now they rule the roost. Adjusting for inflation, films based on DC comics have made just shy of $9 billion in tickets sales, while Marvel has made almost $18 billion. That's double the income in less than half the time. I'm no mathematician, but that's a gigantic gap between the two comic giants. Take away Batman and Superman, and DC disappears like a candle in the wind.

That's right, DC is all about Bats and the Boy Scout. Without them, they are nothing, just flat out nothing, and hence the push to get the two of them together in a movie, now called Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It reeks of desperation, whereas Marvel (taking into all studio licenses) has multiple properties firing on all cylinders.

X-Men: Days of Future Past made the highest ever box office total for the franchise and the highest critical reviews. Guardians of the Galaxy is now the biggest hit of the summer. Captain America: Winter Soldier crushed it in every way possible: making bank, impressing both critics and audiences, and expanding the story told in The Avengers. Even the properties that may be hitting a dip (Spider-Man), are still making money hand over fist. And then we have the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot coming soon. Plus, Deadpool may finally make it into theaters.

Is there any stopping Marvel? Does DC even have a chance of catching them or is it too late? Sound off below.

Marvel May Have Found Their Doctor Strange

Posted by Unknown - Tuesday, August 26, 2014

In yet more exciting news for Marvel's Cinematic Universe, the studio may have at last got the actor they want for the titular role in the upcoming Doctor Strange. As ThisIsInfamous has reported, the mass murderer-playing-psychopath on Boardwalk Empire, Jack Huston, is now the frontrunner to play the Sorcerer Supreme.

Jack Huston is one of the Top 5 most wanted actors to play Doctor Strange
Huston certainly has the look down and this is a better choice to play the character than the names that have been bandied about over the last couple of years like Johnny Depp or Joaquin Phoenix. Nothing against them, but I would rather see someone less known so I can focus on the character and not the actor. Scott Derrickson is set to direct the film, which is being released in 2016. Derrickson has directed some crappy films in the past, like the direct-to-video Hellraiser: Inferno and The Day the Earth Stood Still remake, but he also helmed Sinister, which was an excellent horror film, so I'll nurture some hope that Doctor Strange will be good. It's Marvel, after all.

This is only a rumor at this point, and keep in mind that this same website claimed for sure—no doubt about—it, that Jon Hamm was going to play the character, so don't read too much into it. There is no official statement from Marvel yet, but we also know Huston was in the running to play Peter Quill/Star Lord in The Guardians of the Galaxy, a part that eventually went to Chris Pratt. That means Huston is on their radar and if they liked him enough to push him through deep in the audition process for Star Lord, they could conceivably keep him around for other parts.

Is Huston good on Boardwalk Empire? Would he be a good choice for playing Doctor Strange? Sound off below.

Comedy Central's Censorship of South Park Doomed the Show

Posted by Unknown - Monday, August 25, 2014

As the 18th season of the long-running animated comedy show South Park nears, let us look back a few years and examine what happened when the legendary show hit their epic 200th episode, appropriately titled "200", and its direct sequel, "201". The controversy has had lasting ramifications on the show and been a contributing factor to the current downswing in quality. When Comedy Central bleeped and censored the episodes, they crimped Matt Stone and Trey Parker's creativity and doomed the future of South Park.

south park has jumped the shark in show quality after censorship
It's my suspicion this capitulation on the part of Comedy Central has slowly eroded Matt and Trey's creativity and hunger to do edgy topics and push the envelope. They have stated that after the episode aired in its altered form, they didn't even want to do the next episode. The writing duo was worn out and exhausted from the whole ordeal. It's sad, frustrating, and troubling that a warning from a Muslim extremist group not to air an animated depiction of Muhammad would lead to violent retaliation and that the network caved to the pressure.

As difficult as it is to blame them too much, as this situation would scare anyone, it is also painful to see a once brilliant show become so mediocre. Last year's season 17 was horrid, with only one or two funny episodes, where before almost all of them were great. They have also cut it from the standard 14 episodes per season down to 10, and you can see the air deflating for Matt and Trey. Sure, they have other commitments these days like their Broadway show Book of Mormon, but the enthusiasm for their original baby South Park has faded.

South Park has become safe, and to borrow a favorite word of Eric Cartman, lame. The creators are too worried about offending people to push things like they have in the past. Trust me, when you speak your mind and are as outspoken as these two are, the blowback begins to wear on you after a while. As an artist, a creative force, you begin to second guess your choices and the possible consequences of making those choices. It's a horrible, agonizing way to work.

I think most of us encounter political correctness in our daily lives, and it makes me grind my teeth in frustration. What's so infuriating with episodes "200" and "201" is that they are brilliant celebrations of a great show and demonstrate what Matt and Trey are so good at, but because of the censorship, we may never see it as they intended.

The boys issued this statement before "201" aired:

"In the 14 years we've been doing South Park we have never done a show that we couldn't stand behind. We delivered our version of the show to Comedy Central and they made a determination to alter the episode. It wasn't some meta-joke on our part. Comedy Central added the bleeps. In fact, Kyle's customary final speech was about intimidation and fear. It didn't mention Muhammad at all but it got bleeped too. We'll be back next week with a whole new show about something completely different and we'll see what happens to it."

comedy central censorship of south park
Extremist Muslims are frightening, no doubt, and I can understand the network wanting to protect their people and themselves from potential harm. But they destroyed their flagship show and killed the creativity of the creators. The two episodes that were meant to celebrate the past 199 episodes have been tarnished. What Matt and Trey described as a "clip show without being a clip show" was an amazing look back and also a great story, using past references as story beats instead of throwing away garbage as most clip shows would be; loose ends with who Cartman's dad is, his evil past catching up to him, characters we loved but maybe forgot about, and a deep, compelling visual treatise on violence and caving to political pressure. All this was buried by censorship.

I'll sign off with everyone's full speeches at the end of "201" that Comedy Central bleeped out:

Kyle: That's because there is no goo, Mr. Cruise. You see, I learned something today. Throughout this whole ordeal, we've all wanted to show things that we weren't allowed to show, but it wasn't because of some magic goo. It was because of the magical power of threatening people with violence. That's obviously the only true power. If there's anything we've all learned, it's that terrorizing people works.

Jesus: That's right. Don't you see, gingers, if you don't want to be made fun of anymore, all you need are guns and bombs to get people to stop.

Santa: That's right, friends. All you need to do is instill fear and be willing to hurt people and you can get whatever you want. The only true power is violence.

Do you agree? Has the show dipped in quality since season 14, and was the censorship of these episodes at least partially responsible? Sound off below.

Ever since the series finale of How I Met Your Mother, I have been trying to find a show that can replace something I have been watching on a regular basis for six to seven years. Since the summer is usually filled with reality shows and contests like America's Got Talent and So You Think You Can Dance, I decided I would wait until the big companies would announce their fall lineups to see if there would be any new, interesting shows that would get me hooked. NBC may have done it for me with a TV show that even stars Cristin Milioti, The Mother from How I Met Your Mother, called A to Z.

leaked episodes of A to Z TV series
Now, what is A to Z? That is a question I have been asking myself since I watched the pilot episode, which can be seen on nbc.com, and thought of how interesting the premise of the show was. Below I will be talking about the pilot episode, so just a heads up for spoilers.

Let's begin with the plot of the show. Essentially it's about how these random people, Andrew and Zelda, meet and started dating. There is a narrator that gives information throughout, and even states that the two only end up dating for around nine months, and that the show is specifically about the two's relationship from A to Z. Even the name for the title episode ("A" is for Acquaintances) indicates that the show could quite possibly be only twenty-six episodes long, the length of the alphabet.

All of this is very interesting, as this leads to some very important questions one may be asking themselves from the very first episode, like "Why does their relationship end?" or "Does the relationship not end and they get married?"

Cristin Miloti A to Z images
So what do I think about the pilot episode? I will have to say that I am impressed. Not only is the story interesting, but I find Cristin's new role quite natural and seems right for her. They do a great job introducing the supporting cast, and the chemistry between Andrew and Zelda is spot on as their characters are leaning towards the opposites side of the spectrum. One more thing about A to Z is that there is something charming about it. I can't explain it, but I believe that as long as this show doesn't get cancelled during the first few episodes and lasts its full life cycle, it could possibly be a hit, and can become a classic if all episodes are as well-rounded as the pilot episode.

Have you seen the pilot episode yet? Or are you waiting for the series premiere? Either way be sure to tune into NBC at 9:30 EST, October 2 to watch the premiere. Also be sure to leave a comment below with what you think of the show yourself!

Bravely Default: WTF Review

Posted by Kym Pressley - Sunday, August 24, 2014

Bravely Default Airy Cryst-FairyI recently beat Bravely Default, after taking some time off for reasons I'll explain below. As more tidbits of the sequel come out, I wanted to reflect on the first game in a 3 category format. The wonderful features, those that are tentatively good or bad, and the downright frustrating ones.

For those of you who haven't played it, Bravely Default is pretty much Final Fantasy with some minor changes. The story revolves around a religion based off of the 4 crystals housed in temples. When the world starts going out of whack, Agnes, who has the power to use prayer to manipulate the crystals, is told by her fairy to pray to each one to restore balance. On the other hand, you have the Knights of the Eternian Sky who don't believe the crystals should be manipulated and try, quite violently, to stop Agnes and the rest of your party.

WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW

Wonderful
There are many features within Bravely Default that I was captivated by. Firstly, you can fast forward battle animations. Any consistent RPG player knows that farming or grinding can be a drag simply because battle can take so much time, even for battling enemies lower than you, simply because the animations take a certain amount of time to complete. There are actually two fast forward modes, fast and super fast.

Another thing I really liked that helped with farming and grinding was two items that you would come across later. One allows you to receive no money but receive a huge boost exp and job exp, while the other did the opposite, sacrificing exp and job exp for a bonus to money gained. Pairing that with Auto Battle mode repeats all selections you made the turn before, and you can take out grunts in no time while reaping the rewards.

Battle on its own was really enjoyable as well. In battles against higher health enemies, there's a bit of strategy that makes the battle fun. With the plethora of active and passive abilities available to you, you can mix and match to make devastating combinations.

Tentative
Some of the features of the game are great, but there's also a downside so distinct that it ruins it. For example, there are 24 jobs in the game, each with its own unique play style, active/passive abilities, and weapon/armor proficiencies. Although this adds a number of choices, many of these jobs are very situational. Some offer great abilities only when combined with other jobs. Some are okay for farming, but against a boss, they really aren't necessary. This also leads to certain combinations that are good in all situations, which rules out needing to play other jobs at all.

There's lots of voiced and scripted dialogue in the game that helps with story development. Some of it offers comic relief. However, some of the party chat events are just random, and there's so many of them. It got to the point where I would just start skimming because I became fatigued by them.

The street pass aspects were cool for a few days but quickly fell off. First, you have the ability to send a move to the people that you street pass and then they are able to summon your character and have them perform that move in battle. Sounds awesome when you're in a bind, but since there's nothing urging you to do it, most people don't send a powerful move, just the default potion. Also, once you use a person's move, you can't use it again until they send it again, and because there's nothing in game to remind you, it usually doesn't happen.

There's also Norende village. In this mode there are buildings that can be built and upgraded, but it takes hours to do so. Building and upgrading allows you to buy certain items. The more you street pass, the more NPCs you get, which in turn lowers building time. After a while, you'll have enough villagers to build everything really fast. For me, personally, before I entered Chapter 3, my village was pretty much done and I had no use for this mode anymore. Also, I didn't use a lot of what the village had to offer.

Bravely Default Ninja Asterisk Job Ringabell Edea

Frustrating
There was one part in the game that frustrated me so badly that I had to put the game down for a few days. This actually happened more than once. Usually, I'm pretty open to plot holes and "convenient" story devices or loose ends. However, what Bravely Default did wasted my time with seemingly mindless game padding.

Throughout the story, you're trying to unlock these crystals to undo the calamity that swallowed Norende village. So after you do it the first time by beating up about 28 bosses (one for each job and then the boss at each of the 4 crystals) a pillar of light manifests, and you go through it. What I was expecting at this point was some massive plot progression followed by the next part of the game. What I got was pretty much, "Do it all over again." After you enter the pillar, you end up back on the game map, with indicators for all the bosses that need to be fought again.

Worse yet, at this point there's no real reason as to why. Regardless, I forgave it as a plot device and beat ALL of the bosses again. Keep in mind that about 90% of the cut scenes involved with these boss fights are almost unchanged. Also, the bosses have pretty much the same skill sets but are a little stronger; it's boring repetition. We get a pillar of light again. Awesome, something's going to be revealed this time, and I can move on! Oh, how naive I was. We get a little bit of a reveal as Ringabell starts to recover his memories (oh yay, an amnesia trope on top of parallel worlds). This is where I took 2 weeks off the game the first time.

So again, I beat the side enemies, got the treasure from the chests (some of which wasn't all that great), and finally unlocked the crystals. Another white pillar. I think to myself, they wouldn't make me do it again! I pass through the pillar, and Ringabell recovers all his memories. I progress back to the world map. This is when I took another week off the game. They wanted me to do all that crap AGAIN. You have to beat the crystal bosses 4 times each with the same annoying cut scene before each battle.

Eventually I got back to it, beat the crystal bosses, and FINALLY progressed so could defeat the last 2 bosses.

SPOILERS HAVE ENDED

Bravely Default protagonists Ringabell Edea Agnes Tiz Crystal Orthadoxy

Conclusion
As much of a fan of RPGs as I am, I'm not sure I would really recommend this game. Every RPG has a time when the pace slows, but the padding in Bravely Default made a lot of people put the game down. The great features related to game play become overshadowed by mindless repetition and only determination to know what the end is like will get you through.

For the sequel, I'd like to keep the ability to mix a main job with a sub-job and have combinations of passive abilities. This adds a great layer of strategy. I'd like some job balancing though to make more jobs utilized in more situations. The street pass features need tweaking too, they just don't seem to add much to the game. I'd almost rather them not be there.

If the sequel comes stateside, I would actually recommend people watch cut scene compilations or borrow the game from a friend rather than buy it, even for the used price. What's your take? Did you finish Bravely Default?

Everywhere around the world, Whovians held their breaths and tuned in to the series premiere of Doctor Who, debuting the new regeneration of the Doctor played by Peter Capaldi. Twitter quickly exploded with Doctor Who trending worldwide, and for good reason. Spoilers below.

Peter Capaldi debuts as the 12th Doctor

First, "Don't blink." Now, "Don't breathe." In the words of Madame Vastra, "Well then, here we go again…"

It is inevitable that a season premiere of Doctor Who will have fans on their feet, especially one with a new Doctor. However, in contrast to David Tennant and Matt Smith's 10th and 11th Doctors, Capaldi is left to find his identity and mind. He comes across very distant and moodier than his past incarnations, stating that he has made many mistakes in his past, but its time he'd do something about them.

Nothing quite beats a giant T-Rex stomping through London choking on a giant blue time machine, creepy robot people, and a Scottish Time Lord on a rooftop yelling at the spontaneously combusting dinosaur. You know things are going to get interesting. The newly regenerated 12th Doctor must now figure out how to stop a combusting dinosaur (which actually is killed within the first 20 minutes)and why there is a dinosaur in London in the first placewith the help from his trusty companion. However, after his regeneration, everything changes.

"Deep Breath" doesn't open with a recap of the Doctor's regeneration, which will be confusing to newcomers. After 50 years and 12 Doctors, showrunner and writer Steven Moffat reinvented the Time Lord, delivering a darker tone and taking romance completely off the table.

Since the show's beginning in 1963, Doctor Who has always featured at least one companion, most of which were female. The new season brings a good question to light: are companions only there to flirt? Season 8 begins to explore this topic, which after a verbal throwdown with Madam Vastra and her disappearing veil, Clara begins to grip that she doesn't know who the Doctor is anymore. "Clara, I'm not your boyfriend," the Doctor bluntly points out. (She was put in the friend zone so hard even the Daleks heard, calling them in for the next episode.)

The episode's nearly two hour length gave director Ben Wheatley enough time to introduce the new Doctor and the dynamic that his companions will need to hold their own weight. Clara begins to restart her relationship with the man she jumped in the tiny blue box withwho also realizes that he is Scottish (still not a ginger) and can really complain about things. The Doctor's new appearance was also a main topic of discussion in the episode, with the dialogue about his eyebrows definitely being one of the best moments. ("These are attack eyebrows! You can take bottle tops off with these!")

"He had a young face in order to be accepted. Now he has dropped his veil." - Vastra

The first hour seemed to drag on a bit, and it is disappointing that the episode was seemingly much quieter than fans may have expected. When the Doctor and Clara find themselves in a restaurant with a crowd that isn't actually breathing, the action doesn't build up quite as you'd hope. The clockwork creatures in this episode aren't exactly memorable, but they were definitely creepy in the sense that hey, you could actually breathe around Weeping Angels! Don't blink or breathe, this show just got pretty demanding! That aside, we know with any premiere of a new Doctor, the attention will of course be on the Doctor establishing his identity.

Showcasing Madame Vastra and her wife Jenny, along with their butler Strax, tied the storyline together with some comedic release from Strax who still doesn't quite understand human anatomy. I actually laughed pretty loud when Vastra and Jenny dramatically dropped down Cirque Du Soleil-style before Strax just hard landed on the ground.

Peter Capaldi is a brilliant Doctor and so far seems to be very promising. Lets not forget the Matt Smith cameo that surely played with our emotions. "Give him hell, he'll always need it." Completely brilliant.

Catch Doctor Who every Saturday at 9 p.m. on BBC, and remember, Earth will forever be known as "Planet of the Pudding Brains."

Did you enjoy the premiere? (It's OK, you can breathe now). How do you feel about Capaldi as the 12th Doctor now that we've begun to see where he has taken the role? Let us know in the comment section below.

How Does Superman Get a New Suit for Batman v Superman?

Posted by Saliv - Saturday, August 23, 2014

Greetings, Fanboys and Fangirls! This is Sam Lascio, discussing something that I'm sure must be on most sweaty nerds' minds lately: How does Superman get a new suit in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice?

Give or take the shape of the "S," the style of the shield, or the precise shade of blue and red in his costume, fewer costumes are as iconic as Superman's. When you see that costume, whether you're from America, the UK, China, or the Philippines, whether you're 7 or 70, you know exactly who it is. Superman is one of those heroes who transcends time, even more than Captain America. Superman isn't just an American hero; he's a global protector. So when the first images and trailers dropped for Man of Steel, opinions soared about Superman's "new and improved" costume. His iconic red underwear was missing, the "S" looked strange, he had a textured suit with strange markings on the forearms and sides.

Superman gets a brand new suit in the 2013 film Man of Steel starring Henry Cavill.
The "ta-da!" moment in Man of Steel (2013)
Even with these major alterations, however, most of us either loved it from the start, or it eventually grew on us. That aside, we got one major change from the early comics/previous films. Rather than the suit being developed on Earth (most adaptations have it as a creation of his adoptive mother, Martha Kent), it was created on the Kryptonian ship that would go on to become the iconic Fortress of Solitude. Is this new to most of us geeks? Not really. There are many Superman issues that show that his suit is made from Kryptonian fabric and is thus as indestructible as Superman himself (unless a really powerful villain curb stomps his ass). Unfortunately, this presents a bit of a brick wall when it comes to creativity. As for the new DCCU, new set photos were recently leaked online giving us a better look at Kal's new suit for Batman v Superman.

Comparison of Superman's suit costume from Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Man of Steel suit vs. Batman v Superman suit.
At first glance, it's obvious the suit is different. First off, it's, well, brighter. A big complaint from Superman fans was that the Man of Steel suit was too dull and faded. It looked like Clark put it through the washing machine too many times with bleach. So I mean, yeah, on the surface, this should totally be a plus, right? It might be a little hard to tell from the pictures, but the BvS suit also sports a more rectangular belt buckle than the MoS suit, on which the buckle is more of an oval. Also, it's only a slight difference, but look at the collar. Notice anything? The "S" shield appears to sit lower on the chest than it does on the MoS suit. This presents a bit of a continuity issue.

From the end of MoS, it's obvious that Clark's battle with Zod didn't rip or tear his suit. If two Kryptonians cutting down Metropolis like a hot knife through butter couldn't so much as cause a pit stain, it's not like he could just take it to a seamstress to get it altered or dye the suit a new shade of blue and red. So what's the deal? I've got three possibilities as to what could account for these variations in the suit.

  1. It actually is a different suit. Just like we have multiple wardrobes in our closets, the Fortress of Solitude contained more than one suit from the House of El. Now, I guess one could argue "Why not just wear the suit he wore in Man of Steel anyway?" Well, do you wear the same clothes each and every day? Oh, you do? Well, uh, moving on then…
  2. The costume department for the film didn't care. Now, that's not to say they don't care about continuity. Remember though, some fans were really butt-hurt over the changes presented in Man of Steel. With that in mind, were they just supposed to ignore those complaints and say "No, if we change anything, it'll screw up continuity"? I'm sure some higher ups were listening to fan complaints and decided to make some tweaks to the design, such as the biggest complaint I heard: the colors. More fans were upset about the dull colors than they were about the missing tighty-whiteys (tighty-reddies?). A little reshaping of the belt buckle, lowering the shield down his chest a tad, they probably figured no one would care enough to complain and write an entire article devoted to it. Wait…shit…
  3. Money. money. money. So, you've decided to make a cinematic universe around the DC comics superheroes. You've also decided to give the public something they've been awaiting for decades: Batman fighting Superman. Let me say that again: Batman. Fighting. Superman. The two most iconic superheroes of all time FIGHTING! YES! HELL YES! You want to make as much money as possible, right? So what do you do? You want kids to buy your toys, right? You want them to wear your t-shirts, carry your backpacks, run around as these characters during Halloween, etc. What's the best way to do this? Change the costume ever so slightly so that little Jimmy and Susie can look at these toys and see that WHOA! They're like, so totally different than the old toys! Jimmy already has his action figures, t-shirts, and pillow cases from Man of Steel, and Susie still has her backpack, blankets, and pajamas from Man of Steel, so what's going to make them buy new shit? Change that shit. Boom, you just made a ton of money, my friend. Look at Iron Man 1-3 or Captain America 1 and 2. The Amazing Spider-Man, Thor, X-Men. The list goes on and on. I think the last notable superhero films that didn't change the costume from the previous film was The Dark Knight Rises or the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy. New costumes means new merchandise means more money.

So there you have it, folks. Are they going to mention that Superman has a new look in Batman v Superman? Probably not. Would it be nice to get a small throw-away line about him having more than one suit? Definitely. If I were a betting man, however, I'd wager that we won't get an explanation, at least in the film. Batman though? Shit, it looks like he'll already have two different suits in the film anyway, not to mention the fact that he's loaded. Bruce Wayne could afford to make thousands of different costumes for any imaginable scenario. I'm sure we'll see his suit change throughout the course of the DCCU, along with the other heroes.

What do you think the reason is behind the change? Was it a continuity fail? Is it perhaps a totally different suit? Or, was it all about the money? Maybe you have a different idea? Let us know in the comments section! Thanks for reading, everyone! My name is Sam Lascio, and I am a Fanboy!
