Spoiler alert for those who haven't seen Iron Man 3 yet.
For those that have seen the movie, we now know that Tony Stark has not only blown up his reserve of armored suits but also removed the shrapnel from his heart, meaning there won't be an arc reactor on his chest anymore. After all, what would the purpose be? He doesn't need it to survive, nor does he need it for his suits if he's quit being Iron Man.
So where does this leave us for Avengers 2? It's already been confirmed that Robert Downey Jr will be in the film and the end of Iron Man 3 even specifically reassures us that "Tony Stark will return". What will convince him to rejoin the team and suit up for one if not two more films?
Fanboy Sean Mitchell brought up the point that perhaps it could be something as simple as what Nick Fury said in the first film: they'll return because they'll need to. Without knowing the plot of the film or even the villain for certain, it's difficult to figure out just exactly what will hit home for Tony Stark to make him become Iron Man again - particularly after this film LITERALLY had something hit his home.
Will they gloss over this fact and just have him decide "fuck it, I like being Iron Man"? Will they forgo the happy conclusion of this film and kill off Pepper Potts? Hopefully, there isn't a huge amount of time that they have to dedicate to bringing Tony back on to the team as that eats up time that could be utilized with pure fun. He claims he's not the hero type, but at the same time, we all know the story of these films has been about him having a heart and doing the right thing.
