Attenborough then went on to direct several more pictures and act in many films before winning an Oscar for directing the Ben Kingsley starring biopic Gandhi in 1982. He also directed Robert Downey Jr. in another biopic in 1992 called Chaplin. Attenborough is perhaps best known for starring as John Hammond in the mega-blockbuster Jurassic Park the next year. This was of course directed by Stephen Spielberg and I'm sure the two men had a great time working together, one Oscar winning director to another.
He made a cameo appearance in the sequel, Jurassic Park: The Lost World, and it's impossible for me to think of the movie without hearing his voice... "Welcome to Jurassic Park!" In 1967, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Attenborough was then made a Knight Bachelor in 1976 and in 1993 he was made a life peer as a Baron. I don't know what all of that means but it sounds impressive.
Richard Attenborough is survived by his wife of 70 years, two children, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Any other favorite roles besides John Hammond? Other directing gigs I should check out? Sound off below in the comments.
