Welcome to another edition of WEEK IN GEEK here at Fanboys Anonymous—a rundown of some of the events, news and stories that went down over the past few days in the geek culture spectrum.
Here are some of the topics I felt like voicing my opinions about:
Eternals Teaser
Well. That wasn't much. After all this time, all they bothered to release was basically a series of still images with nothing to really sink your teeth into? This felt more like a motion graphic you'd put up on Twitter rather than a true look at the film to convince anyone to see the movie. And look, I know that the MCU is just a brand in and of itself at this point that sells people on seeing the film based entirely on seeing the word Marvel. I'm obviously going to see this opening night. But since I have no fandom for the Eternals characters and most people are in the same boat I'm in, where we don't know these people, I think you need to sell audiences on more than "it's another MCU film"—especially if the jokes aren't all that funny and the visuals aren't anything we haven't seen before.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson Cast as Kraven the Hunter
ATJ is a great actor. Everything I've seen him in, he's done a fantastic job, for the most part. But I don't picture him as Kraven whatsoever. Nor do I think doing a Kraven solo film is a good idea. I still maintain the better scenario would have been Kraven as the main villain of the third Spider-Man film, hunting down fugitive Peter Parker, who could team up with Daredevil and Black Panther (as Kraven could have ties to Wakanda). This just seems like a bad idea all around and I've been hating Sony's methodology of "we have characters, so let's just do tons of movies based on them". Nobody wanted to see a Jackpot film, for instance. Kraven isn't a solo movie guy, in my mind.
Sin
Rumor has it, the villain of Captain America 4 will be Red Skull's daughter, Sin.
I don't buy it. They just had both the Flag-Smashers and the Power Broker as female-led villains in the TV series and I can't imagine Sam having an all-out fist fight with another young red head girl as the follow-up. Hence why I think switching Morgenthau was a bad idea, or at least, they shouldn't have gone with "young redhead girl" as the archetype to change to.
Serpent Society/Squad could be a thing, maybe with Cutthroat and such. Blackwing, maybe, if they want to ignore Agent Carter. The Corporation? Doctor Faustus? Grand Director?
Stowaway
For a random viewing, I watched the film Stowaway on Netflix. Not bad, but I wouldn't recommend it for anything other than a quick watch that you don't need to be super invested in. 3/5 type film.
